Restoration

Restoration of the native prairie site at SWROC has been progressing since 2004. The prairie remnant has never been tilled due to hillside and wetland qualities that make it unsuitable for agriculture production. Also, minimal research has been conducted on the site.
The first steps
An analysis team has acknowledged a wide range of prairie plant species, substantial ecological diversity and the existence of an unusual hillside fen. It has been determined that restoration of the prairie site will result in many ecological and educational benefits. Monetary and development support from several organizations and agencies is allowing for initial restoration efforts which include a burn regimen, reclamation program and reseeding of native prairie plants.
The restoration team
The prairie restoration project at SWROC involves collaboration with several University of Minnesota personnel, federal, state and local agencies, plus private industry and local environmental and wildlife groups.
